We have learned that the son of a woman who died last year while in police custody has filed a legal claim against the City and County of San Diego. A claim is a precursor to a potential wrongful death lawsuit.
The claim says that police officers ignored Aleah Mariah Jenkins’ pleas for help after she had been arrested. Jenkins, 24, was in a vehicle that was pulled over on November 27, 2018, on La Jolla Village Drive. Police say they found small baggies of drugs next to her and arrested her. Jenkins was placed in a police cruiser.
The claim states that Jenkins was taken to police headquarters where, according to bodycam footage obtained by the media, Jenkins began crying for help. The officer pulled over to check on her but decided to continue to the station. By the time they arrived, Jenkins was unconscious in the backseat.
The medical examiner listed the cause of death as accidental, caused by a lethal dose of methamphetamine and lack of oxygen to the brain.
Jenkins’ child says that officers “ignored numerous signs that she required immediate medical assistance despite obvious and clear symptomology.”
