Jeffrey Levi was arrested in early January after he was accused of drunk driving and hitting another car on Interstate 15. The crash set off a chain reaction event that involved a San Diego police detective. The incident killed two people and seriously injured one other.
Now, Levi says he is not the only one to blame for the crash. On January 10, he filed a claim against the city of San Diego that asked the city and the police department to assume what is called “indemnity and apportionment of fault” for the crash.
Levi faces two counts of murder, two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter, and two felony counts of DUI with serious bodily harm. It is no surprise that he wants to shift some of the blame off of himself.

According to reports, Levi was traveling at speeds near 100 mph on I-15 when he rear-ended a Toyota sedan carrying Jesus David Dominguez, Jiovanna Dominguez, and Isaac Felix. The crash sent Levi’s vehicle down an embankment and left the Toyota disabled in the middle of the highway.
An off-duty SDPD detective then struck the disabled vehicle which ignited the car into flames. Jesus Dominguez and Isaac Felix were killed and Jiovanna Dominguez was severely injured.
A police helicopter found Levi about 15 minutes later. Three hours after the incident, his blood alcohol level registered at .167, over double the legal limit.
In Levi’s claim, he attempts to shift the blame by citing negligence by the off-duty detective and the police department.
We do not know what the outcome of this case will be, but we do know that drunk driving is a major cause of concern for Californians. For the latest reporting year, 29% of all traffic fatalities were due to alcohol-related drivers.
Car accidents are not uncommon, but when they are caused by another driver’s negligence, those drivers need to be held accountable for their actions. There is no reason that car crash victims and their families should be left with massive medical bills that they have no way to pay.
