The husband of one of the people killed in a recent accident that took the lives of three people is speaking out for the first time. Rey David Velasco Herrera, a 43-year-old man, was the one driving a car that was struck by a pickup truck at Oceanside Boulevard and S. Coast Highway recently. The crash claimed the life of his wife, 40-year-old Petra Arango, as well as his sister-in-law and mother-in-law. This 13-year-old daughter and his father were also injured in the crash.
“Twenty years we were married happily,” says Herrera. “I would never trade her for anything in the world. She was the greatest mother, greatest daughter to her mom. She was everything, basically, the anchor of the home.”
We bring you his words because we want to put a face to alleged impaired driving. The 19-year-old who struck them had run a red light before the impact. Police found cocaine on him and are awaiting the toxicology results. At The Law Offices of Eugene G. Bruno, we are here when you need a San Diego car accident attorney.
Some states in the US do not even hit a total of 1,000 traffic-related fatalities each year. In California, alcohol-involved crashes alone killed more than 1,500 people during the latest reporting year. They injured over 27,000 people.
While we do not have solid numbers when it comes to drugged driving, we know that 15% of drivers killed in collisions tested positive for drugs.
Impaired driving is not the only cause for concern in California. The number one cause of accidents is still speeding. In surveys, drivers across the state cite speeding and aggressive driving as their main cause of concern when it comes to roadway safety.
We also know that, despite the strict state and local laws, distracted driving is a major problem. When a person is focused on a text message or video instead of the roadway, they are much more likely to get into an accident.
Injuries from car accidents can cost tremendous amounts of money. They can ruin a person financially, especially if insurance companies do not offer enough to cover all of the expenses. Minor injuries can cost more than a paycheck-to-paycheck family can afford. Major injuries can lead a family to bankruptcy.
