In a move that will improve the safety of pedestrians, bicyclists, and scooter riders alike, the San Diego Association of Governors has voted to accept $2.2 million from the city to completely transform Normal Street in Hillcrest. The plan also has the backing of the Hillcrest Business Association.
“I think communities are hungry for alternative transportation opportunities, creating safe spaces to be able to walk and bicycle and scooter, and make a landscape that works for everybody,” said Councilmember Christopher Ward.
This promenade is being constructed as the city looks for ways to balance pedestrian safety with business opportunities. With the explosion of scooters onto the city scene, San Diego has seen a rise in injuries to pedestrians, a group already vulnerable.
At the Eugene Bruno & Associates, we think this is a good step forward. We also know that pedestrians face many dangers throughout this area. If you need a San Diego pedestrian accident attorney, you can count on us to secure the compensation you deserve.
We think it is great that the city is making strides towards pedestrian safety. We know that California is a dangerous place for pedestrians, particularly those in major cities. If we look at the DOT statistics for the latest reporting year in California, we see that there were more than 14,000 pedestrian accident injuries.
The thing about most pedestrian accidents is this – the injuries are often much worse than regular vehicle accident injuries. Without the protection of a metal frame airbags, the human body often ends up severely damaged when struck by a vehicle that weighs thousands of pounds. It is not uncommon for a victim to suffer from injuries that leave them permanently disabled.
So, how do these accidents happen?
Often, they are the result of negligent driver behavior. Drunk and distracted drivers are major culprits, as are those who speed and drive aggressively. Often, pedestrians are stuck in areas where they should feel safe (crosswalks, right-of-ways, intersections, etc.).
Some of the worst pedestrian accidents occur when larger vehicles are involved. This can include commercial trucks, buses, and construction vehicles.
However, vehicles are not the only threat facing pedestrians. They are also in danger from electric scooters, bicyclists, and anyone else sharing the sidewalks.
Regardless of how a pedestrian crash occurs, if someone else’s negligence is to blame, they should be held accountable. We know that pedestrians face many dangers around the city and that accidents that happen are often due to the negligence of another person.
