36-year-old Hyun Jeong Choi has been on trial after being charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury. Prosecutors have argued that she was under the influence of marijuana when she caused a head-on collision that killed one person on the other car. Another passenger in the vehicle sustained a traumatic brain injury.
Choi, who has a history of DUI before the incident, has apparently just bought a bag of marijuana from a nearby dispensary. Police found an open bag of the drug and a freshly used pipe in her vehicle after the crash.
At the Law Offices of Eugene G. Bruno, we want you to know that driving under the influence of drugs is illegal. It does not get as much coverage as drinking and driving does, but this case shows that the outcome can be just as deadly. We know that this is one of the many dangers that drivers and passengers face each day around the city. If you need a San Diego car accident attorney, call us today.
In the immediate aftermath of a vehicle accident, the most important thing is for everyone who is injured to get medical treatment. Once that is taken care of, there will likely be many questions. If you have been injured due to the extreme negligence of another driver, you will want to make sure they are held responsible.
When we say negligence, we are talking about many things that can happen. As we see in the story above, anyone who causes harm while driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol should be held accountable for their actions. Impaired driving accidents were responsible for 27% of the traffic fatalities in California during the latest reporting year.
We also know that one of the top causes of accidents has to do with driver distractions. This can come in many forms but has been increasing as we become more and more dependent on technology in our lives. How often do you see the driver next to you looking at their phone instead of the roadway? Of course, there are also times when people are distracted by their passengers or even pets.
Vehicle accidents can cause major injuries and lead to tremendous expenses that insurance may not cover. Do you know where to turn after an accident?
