Every once in a while, a wrongful death case rises to national attention and that is the case with one going on right in our area. This one, though, touches on multiple sensitive issues – immigration and transgender rights.
Earlier this year, Roxsana Hernandez, a transgender woman, died while in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. Hernandez arrived at the border after leaving her home in Honduras and she “came to the US seeking protection and instead was met with torture,” according to the Transgender Law Center.
The lawsuit states that Hernandez was shackled, had bruising injuries consistent with baton strikes, and died due to dehydration. The family is hoping this lawsuit will provide them with answers about what happened.
