We have our fair share of pedestrian accidents in San Diego. Unfortunately, so do our neighbors. Nearby Encinitas is looking at implementing Vision Zero, a program that is trying to eliminate injuries and fatalities that happen in traffic accidents.
The Encinitas City Council is looking for solutions after a string of pedestrian accidents recently. In less than a month, the city saw two pedestrian fatalities as a result of vehicle collisions.
“I think it’s important that we acknowledge that there are too many situations that are resulting in fatalities in our city between pedestrians and vehicles, and for me it’s important that we do everything that we can to try to raise awareness about safety issues,” said Councilman Tony Kranz.
Mayor Catherine Blakespear said, “Encinitas streets should be safe for those biking and walking.”

We know that pedestrians are the most vulnerable group of people in and around the roadway. With no protection from the force of a vehicle, almost every pedestrian accident results in an injury or fatality. For the latest reporting year, there were over 14,000 pedestrians were injured in traffic accidents. Nearly 900 were killed.
In San Diego, there were more than 700 pedestrians killed or injured in traffic accidents.
Often, injuries from these accidents are serious and result in long hospital stays, extended rehabilitation, and even permanent disabilities. The emotional and financial costs of pedestrian accidents are tremendous.
So many pedestrian accidents happen due to careless drivers who ignore right-of-ways. Even at slower speeds, pedestrians can suffer severe injuries.
Drunk drivers pose a major threat to everyone in and around the roadway. We also know that distracted drivers are a problem, especially as more and more technology moves into our vehicles. In fact, in a survey recently released from the state Office of Traffic Safety, nearly half of respondents said they have made a driving mistake while talking on the cell phone.
Careless and reckless drivers should be held accountable for their actions when they cause injuries.
