We already know that San Diego officials have been struggling to find a balance between welcoming electric scooters to our streets and protecting our citizens. Now, a lawsuit filed in California on behalf of nine plaintiffs is really putting the spotlight on scooter safety.
The nine people are all victims of scooter injuries. Some were injured while riding, some were struck by riders, and others tripped and fell over discarded scooters. One man says he had to get surgery for a torn bicep tendon after a Bird scooter rider crashed into him earlier this year. Another says that he ended up with eight damaged teeth and stitches on his lip when a rider crashed into him.
We know that pedestrians in San Diego face dangers each day, whether from scooters, bicycles, vehicles, or more. Do you know where to turn if you have been injured in a pedestrian accident?
Pedestrians are the most vulnerable group of people on and around our roadways. They have no protection from the force of a vehicle or another object slamming into them. Pedestrians who are struck usually end up with a secondary impact with the ground which can cause even more injuries.
Pedestrians are almost always injured in some way when an accident occurs. Often, the injuries are severe. It is not uncommon for pedestrians to suffer from spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, severe internal organ damage, broken bones, and major soft tissue damage.
These injuries all require emergency care, including surgery. In the aftermath of an accident, an injury victim may need long-term care, depending on the severity of the damage.
For the latest reporting year in California, there were 14,215 pedestrian injuries from traffic collisions. There were 867 pedestrian fatalities.
Like the story above, electric scooters are just the latest thing that pedestrians have to worry about. Even when pedestrians are at right-of-ways, they are at risk of being struck by careless or negligent drivers. Many times, distracted drivers are busy looking at their cell phones instead of the roadway and do not see pedestrians until it is too late.
We know that drunk drivers are a hazard to everyone in and around the roadway. Often, drunk drivers fail to even hit the brakes before striking a pedestrian.
Getting injured can really set you back. Not only will you have medical bills, but you may lose valuable income if you are not able to work while you heal.
Will you be able to support your family in the aftermath of a pedestrian accident?
