An 18-wheeler crashed into a disabled vehicle in University City, causing the truck to careen sideways and slide down a nearby embankment into a canyon. The van was parked on the shoulder of the highway on Interstate 805 when the large truck collided with it. The owners of the van were not injured, and the truck driver was able to remove himself from his vehicle and climb back up the canyon to the highway, although he was reported to have sustained some injuries and was taken for treatment at an area hospital shortly after the incident took place. It is not known whether the van had its hazard lights, on nor is it known whether driver fatigue or distraction may have played a role in the crash.
Collisions involving heavy trucks can be especially devastating because of the large size and heavy weight of the vehicle involved. Smaller cars and motorcycles can become trapped beneath the freight area of the truck, and even just the cab of a semi weighs so much that it can crush most other vehicles on the road. These trucks are slow to break, as well, meaning that even a vigilant truck driver may have a difficult time bringing his vehicle to a stop in an attempt to prevent an accident.
According to data published by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, approximately 475,000 collisions involving heavy trucks were reported in 2016, the most recent year for which data is available. During this year, nearly 4,000 of those collisions had fatal results. Most accidents where semis are involved took place in rural communities, with interstates being the second-most common setting for these crashes. In 2016, more than 50,000 heavy trucks were involved in crashes that resulted in injuries, either to the truck driver or to other motorists.
It is crucial that you seek medical care following an accident on the roadway, no matter how seemingly minor. Injuries that may remain hidden for days, such as “whiplash,” may not seem apparent directly after a truck collision, but could later surface and cause you pain and suffering. A medical professional can evaluate your injuries and treat you. After medical treatment, document your injuries by taking photos and retaining medical reports regarding your condition, then contact a truck crash attorney in San Diego to discuss your legal rights as an accident victim.
