A 23 year-old mother whose drunk driving led to the deaths of two children was recently sentenced to 8 years in prison. The Chula Vista woman drove her minivan with a 0.13 percent blood alcohol concentration (BAC) last August 5 when she lost control of the vehicle. The minivan fell down an embankment, flipped, and landed on its roof in Otay Reservoir. The vehicle then sank.
The woman’s passengers were her 5-year-old daughter, the daughter’s 5-year-old friend, and the friend’s father. Both adults managed to get free of the sunken vehicle but the two little girls were not able to get their seatbelts open while submerged in the water. The girls were pronounced dead a short time later by medical officials. The convicted woman was charged with DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter. She could have received 12 years in prison.
